About Us

This exhibition was put together for the Otago University classics paper ‘CLAS344: From Augustus to Nero: Scandal and Intrigue in Imperial Rome.’ During this class, we studied both Suetonius’ "Lives of the Caesars" and Tacitus’ "Annals" to come to a greater understanding of the Roman Julio-Claudian Emperors. We also came together in groups to study how Imperial period coinage was used as propaganda for the Emperors. For this project, we have selected five coins to show how Emperor Tiberius failed to live up to the examples set by his adoptive-father Emperor Augustus, and how the following three Emperors - Caligula, Claudius, and Nero - each tried to use coins to show that they had learned from Tiberius’ mistakes. Particularly regarding his attitudes toward family, the Republic, and the military. During this project, we were grateful for the opportunity to gain some real-life experience working with the materials. We would like to offer a huge thank you to the Otago Museum for providing us access to the coins and granting us image usage rights. Finally, we would like to thank Charlotte Dunn, who kindly photographed the coins for us. Our People: Our team consisted of five University of Otago students with varying interests, who were brought together in 2018 for this exhibition.
